There is a lot of buzz around Artificial Intelligence and what it can do for you. The promise of increased efficiency and productivity is tantalizing to companies of every size and vertical. Many companies are looking into piloting workstreams to see how AI can help their companies reduce costs and increase productivity.

Differentiating AI/ML and Generative AI

AI/ML (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning):

These technologies are integrated into many daily products and services. They work behind the scenes to recommend purchases on Amazon or suggest shows on Netflix. They also automate data processes by sorting, clustering, and creating segments for marketing and targeting purposes.

Generative AI (GenAI):

This newer form of AI, part of neural networks or deep learning, gained public attention in November 2022 with the launch of ChatGPT. Unlike traditional AI/ML, Generative AI predicts language formation and creates new text outputs based on prompts, mimicking human-generated content such as blog posts, email campaigns, and strategic recommendations.

When should I use AI?

Yet, with a plethora of AI tools in the market, it’s difficult to know which one to choose. In essence, there’s more to AI than meets the eye. You must first start off with understanding what problem you’re trying to solve and find the right AI tool for you.

Not all AI tools are created equal and what they can do for you may not fit your needs.

In fact, understanding your problem or task is the first step in identifying whether an AI solution is right. It’s obvious, but you don’t want to get caught up in the hype and invest resources in a tool that you don’t need. You might even conclude that you don't need AI and that manual, human way is still far better. Below are the different types of AI.

Understanding Different Types of AI

AI Assisted

AI-assisted work typically involves tools that aid humans in completing tasks more efficiently. These tools do not take over the tasks but instead support decision-making processes, automate repetitive tasks, or provide insights that might not be immediately obvious. This can include anything from virtual assistants that help manage your schedule to complex analytics platforms that provide real-time data insights.

E.g. Chatbots and Virtual Assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant and Zendesk

AI Generated

AI-generated content is completely produced by artificial intelligence, with little to no human intervention. This type of AI is revolutionizing creative fields such as art, writing, and music. For instance, AI can now compose music, create realistic images from textual descriptions, or write articles on specific topics. While it opens up new avenues for creativity and content creation, it also raises questions about originality and copyright.

E.g. Content Creation Tools like ChatGPT

AI Supported

AI-supported functions serve as the backbone of many systems, optimizing operations and enhancing performance without being directly involved in the user interface or decision-making process. This could involve algorithms that optimize logistics and supply chain operations, AI that manages energy distribution efficiently in smart grids, or systems that predict maintenance for industrial equipment, thereby preventing downtime.

E.g. Supply Chain Optimization, like IBM Watson

AI Enhanced

AI-enhanced products or services are those that have been upgraded or improved through the integration of AI technologies. This enhancement can lead to products that are more intuitive and responsive to user needs. For example, smartphones that use AI to enhance camera capabilities, providing better photo quality without the need for manual adjustments, or smart home devices that learn from your habits and preferences to provide a more personalized experience.

E.g. Smartphones, like Apple, Google, Samsung etc.

AI Work

Broadly speaking, AI work encompasses all activities where AI plays a crucial role. This can range from fully automated systems performing tasks without human intervention, to hybrid approaches where AI and humans work together. The focus here is on leveraging AI to achieve goals that were previously unattainable due to complexity, scale, or the sheer volume of data.

E.g. Autonomous Vehicles, like Tesla and Waymo.

Choosing the Right AI for Your Needs

Understanding the different types of AI and how they can be applied is crucial in choosing the right tool for your specific needs. Whether you're looking to enhance productivity, automate processes, or unlock new creative potentials, there's likely an AI solution that fits the bill.

However, it's important to approach AI with a clear understanding of your objectives and the challenges you're aiming to address.
